Alzheimer’s Caregiving: Resources

Although resources designed to assist caregivers of patients who suffer from some form of dementia are plentiful, the existence of these programs is only as good as your knowledge of them. Today, we’ll focus on only a few of the available provisions of aid.

When I began caring for my mother, I had no idea there were community resources that could have lessened the intensity of my workload. As my journey progressed and I became employed as a medical social worker I gained knowledge that was of great benefit to me.

Adult Day Care

The most helpful program for me was Adult Day Care. In my area, there is an agency called Life Senior Services that provides daily care for patients who suffer from memory impairment due to having Alzheimer’s or any form of dementia.

It’s very similar to Child care facilities in that they provide all day supervision and meaningful activities for their charges. Two meals and snacks are available, arts and crafts, and other engaging activities. My mother particularly enjoyed walking across the street to a local theatre to watch recently released movies.

If needed, therapies are available on site and frequent reports of all activities are shared with guardians or caregivers.

Adult Day Care provides much comfort for providers who need to remain in the work…
